Details: The farmers interviewed stress the importance of rain in agriculture; without it, they have nothing.  In our economic production function we have resources which are used to create output.  In the song, rain is an input in the production process and a very important one at that.  
So many other goods and services depend on agriculture, "Rain makes corn, corn makes whisky".  The amount of rainfall, or lack thereof, helps explain why different parts of the country specialize in different crops.  For example, Iowa receives an average rainfall of 32 inches while Kansas only receives 27 inches.  This is part of the reason Iowa is usually one of the largest corn producers while Kansas is the top wheat producing state.
